Vistors going through the zoo hold PDAs close to RFID tags, which are attached to animal cages, and which thus identify the animals. Over WLAN, the PDAs send this ID to a Web server, which sends back a multime dia Web presentation for the respective animal. The novel idea is to additionally attach the Web server to a global zoo peer-to-peer system, thus enabling zoos world wide to share animal presentations. Each zoo contributes multime dia presentations for some of their animals in one or several languages, but can also download presentations for other animals in many other languages.

In the United States, possession and distribution of marijuana is nominally illegal. But you don't have to be Tommy Chong to know that pot's legal status is cloudy and confused. Growing and using 'medical' marijuana is legal in 11 states, and in cities like San Francisco it's easy enough to find locally grown product. In addition to being inconsistent, as critics have long pointed out, the federal ban is also irrational. It treats marijuana differently than similar products for no obvious reason. People use prescription drugs, pot, and alcohol for the same purposes: to get high, relax, and dull pain. The consequences of abuse are similar: crashed cars, disease, and lots of wasted time. So, what makes marijuana special?

The irrationality of U.S. marijuana policy is not news. Support of legalization has made bedfellows of people like Willie Nelson and William F. Buckley Jr., backed up by Richard Posner and Dr. Dre. And a Supreme Court decision on whether the federal laws can trump state statutes in this area is expected any day. But the strange status of marijuana may also bring down the scrutiny of a different entity altogether: the World Trade Organization and its powerful condemnation of inconsistent national laws. The American ban on marijuana is what the WTO calls 'a barrier to trade,' raising the question: Can U.S. marijuana policy survive the tough scrutiny of world trade law?"

"Today's Front Pages" is an online presentation of one of the Newseum's most popular exhibits. Every morning, more than 300 newspapers from around the world submit their front pages to the Newseum via the Internet. Sixty-eight of the front pages are selected for an outdoor exhibit located at Pennsylvania Avenue and Sixth Street in downtown Washington, D.C., future site of the Newseum. Front pages are chosen to represent each of the 50 states as well as a selection of other countries. The electronic files are printed out on large-format printers at the Newseum offices in Arlington, Va., and are then transported to the Pennsylvania Avenue site and mounted inside the 98-foot-long steel and Plexiglas display by 8:30 a.m., seven days a week. All of the front pages received that morning are then posted on the Newseum's Web site. The full selection of each day's front pages is available on the Web site by 9:30 a.m. daily.

Pop-up Blocker: Prevents most pop-up ads from being displayed by your browser. The button icon changes to reflect whether the pop-up blocker is active or if a pop-up has been prevented from launching. The total number of stopped pop-ups is also displayed. To activate the pop-up blocker, access the Toolbar Options window from the Toolbar's Google pull-down menu and click the box next to pop-up blocker in the Accessories section of the Options tab. To allow pop-ups to launch on a one time basis without turning off the pop-up blocker, press the Ctrl key as you click the link to move to a new page. AutoFill: Eliminates the need to type your personal information into web forms (such as store shopping carts). Go to the AutoFill tab on the Options menu and enter the information you want stored on your computer. This information is secure and will not be transmitted unless you tell the AutoFill function to place it into a form. If AutoFill thinks it can fill in information based on what you've told it, it will display the field it wants to fill in yellow and ask your permission to plug in your data (e.g., name or address). To enable the AutoFill button, access the Options page from the Toolbar's Google pull-down menu and click the box next to AutoFill button in the Accessories section of the Options tab. BlogThis!: With the press of a button you can create a weblog (blog) post pointing to the web page you're visiting. If you select text on the page, that text also appears in your blog post. To enable the BlogThis! button, access the Options page from the toolbar's Google pull-down menu. You must have a blog already set up to take advantage of this feature. Another way to meet people is by participating in communities, which are group journals in which multiple users can post entries.
